Chicago, Illinois -- November 29, 1998 - In support of the shift in U.S. health care from the operating room to less invasive outpatient procedures, Hitachi Medical Systems America, Inc. (HMSA) introduced the second in their planned roll-out of innovative X-Ray products at the annual Radiological Society of North America meeting, being held this week in Chicago.

Hitachi's new unit, called the VA200, combines R&F and angiographic capabilities into a single, compact, digital, tilt-C design. "The versatility of the VA200 makes it highly productive and extremely cost effective - two key criteria for capital purchases," stated John Newland, marketing manager for X-Ray products at HMSA. "Virtually any radiographic, fluoroscopic or angiographic procedure can be handled efficiently with the VA200 system." Availability of the VA200 is pending FDA pre-market clearance.

The VA100 rotational angiography system was the first innovative X-Ray product Hitachi introduced to the U.S. market. It collects data 360 degrees around the patient - in less than 5 seconds - from a single contrast injection. By rotating around the vessel of interest, it is possible to reveal abnormalities that might otherwise be hidden by overlying structures. Examination time is greatly reduced in many cases because the need for additional injections of contrast to acquire additional views is eliminated.

"The VA100 gantry design is extremely stable and all rotating hardware is protected from harming the patient or attending personnel - a key differentiation from conventional angiography systems," added Newland. "3D angiographic studies acquired rotationally will be an important contributor to the surgical planning process and trauma assessment."
